Former Information Minister and Member of Parliament, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has thrown his support behind the proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport, describing the move as necessary and a step in the right direction.

Speaking on the matter, the Ofoase-Ayirebi MP indicated that the renaming proposal aligns with broader national conversations about identity, historical reflection, and Ghana’s democratic values.

According to him, airports around the world are increasingly named after cities rather than individuals, a practice he believes enhances national cohesion and avoids unnecessary controversy linked to historical figures.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah noted that while General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka played a role in Ghana’s political history, the time has come for the country to reassess how public institutions are named, particularly those that serve as international gateways.

He stressed that renaming the airport after the capital city, Accra, would present a more neutral and globally acceptable identity, especially for international travelers and investors.

“This is not about erasing history but about making thoughtful decisions that reflect who we are today as a nation,” he is reported to have said.

The proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport has sparked mixed reactions among the public, with some supporting the change on historical grounds, while others argue that the name Kotoka is deeply rooted in Ghana’s post-independence history.

As discussions continue, Hon. Oppong Nkrumah has called for calm, constructive, and inclusive dialogue, urging Ghanaians to focus on unity and national progress rather than division.
