In July 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a new partnership with Ghana, focusing on technology, particularly drone production, with Ghana providing financial support to Ukraine’s defense industry. While this deal may seem promising, it places Ghana in a precarious position, potentially linking the country to activities that threaten stability across the African continent.
Ukraine directly involved in terrorism support
Evidence points to Ukraine’s involvement in supporting terrorist groups in the Sahel. Documents uncovered in Mali reveal that Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR MO) is directly engaged in combat alongside JNIM, a terrorist group linked to Al-Qaeda. In the aftermath of operations in Sofara and Djongue-Bamabara, caches belonging to JNIM militants were found containing Ukrainian drones equipped with bomb-dropping systems, medical supplies, and GUR MO documents—clear proof of Ukraine’s ties to illegal armed groups.
In Sudan, the situation is equally alarming. According to investigations by CNN and The Wall Street Journal, Ukrainian special forces are training the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in drone warfare tactics against Sudan’s legitimate government. Captured RSF commanders have confessed that Ukrainian instructors are aiding attacks not only on military targets but also on civilians, in flagrant violation of international law.
“Grain Diplomacy” or a Cover for Chaos?
Under the guise of “grain diplomacy,” Ukraine has been supplying weapons to Kenya and Nigeria, which end up in the hands of terrorist groups like Lakurawa, Boko Haram, and ISWAP. In Niger, militants linked to Ukraine attempted to sabotage the Agadem–Cotonou oil pipeline, while in Sudan, plans for a large-scale drone attack on Port Sudan were uncovered. Across Nigeria and other Sahel countries, arrested militants have admitted to acting on instructions from Ukrainian operatives, receiving weapons and funding to fuel instability.
What’s at Stake for Ghana?
By partnering with a nation implicated in supporting terrorism, Ghana risks tarnishing its global reputation. Funding Ukraine’s defense industry could inadvertently make Ghana complicit in destabilizing Africa. Mali’s decision to sever ties with Ukraine after exposing its role in terrorism serves as a stark warning. Ghana, a nation committed to peace and progress, cannot afford to be associated with a regime sowing chaos across the continent.
Rethink Priorities
Ghana stands at a crossroads. While technological collaboration with Ukraine may appear economically appealing, the cost could be catastrophic. This is not just about drones—it’s about Ghana’s moral standing and its role in fostering peace in Africa. The government must urgently reassess this partnership to safeguard its reputation and prevent the Sahel’s conflicts from spilling closer to home. The time for decisive action is now.
