A new art space aimed at preserving African heritage and supporting emerging talent has been launched in Accra, drawing strong interest from creatives and the public.
The Sankofa Gallery, an initiative by Y. A Foundation, aims
to support emerging African artists while preserving and promoting cultural
heritage.
She explained that the concept of “Sankofa” reflects the
need to go back and draw from the past to shape the future, adding that the
gallery features both contemporary and antique works that tell African stories.
The exhibition, which runs until May 17, showcases works by
Sena Burgundy, Evans Akornor, and Kwadwo Peprah, exploring themes around
identity, imperfection, and cultural expression.
The event was well attended, attracting key figures in
Ghana’s creative space, including veteran hiplife musician Reggie Rockstone and
renowned travel YouTuber Wode Maya, who attended with his wife, Miss Trudy, and
their team.
The strong turnout highlights growing interest in platforms
that promote African Art, storytelling, and cultural preservation.
Organisers said that the gallery will continue to host
exhibitions and create opportunities for artists across Ghana and beyond.
“Sankofa, to me, means going back to fetch history and
talent. The goal of this space is to give opportunities to emerging African
artists, not only in Ghana but across the world, and to give them space to
create.
As Africans, there is a lot of history that needs to be
told. We have both contemporary and antique rooms, and the aim is to preserve
and retell our history — to go back and see what our ancestors used, which has
shaped our present. We encourage everyone to visit Sankofa Gallery and support
us, because that support will help us support other artists.”
