Nigerian man wins court case against ex-girlfriend over failed marriage agreement after sponsoring her education

A Nigerian man has reportedly secured a legal victory against his former girlfriend after a court ruled in his favour over a disputed agreement tied to her education and a promised marriage.

According to details of the case, the man had taken full financial responsibility for the woman’s education, allegedly based on a mutual understanding that they would marry upon her graduation. The arrangement was said to have had the backing of the woman’s family, who reportedly agreed to the terms before he committed his resources to supporting her schooling.

However, after successfully completing her studies, the woman is said to have declined the marriage, stating that she was no longer interested in proceeding with the relationship.

The development led to legal action, with the man seeking redress for what he described as a breach of agreement that resulted in both financial loss and emotional distress.

In its ruling, the court emphasized that no individual can be compelled to marry against their will. Nonetheless, it acknowledged that there had been a clear expectation and understanding between both parties, which influenced the man’s decision to sponsor her education.

The court consequently held that the woman’s refusal to honour the agreement had caused measurable harm to the man and warranted compensation.

She has therefore been ordered to pay ₦15 million in damages.

The case has since sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the legal and moral implications of agreements tied to relationships, education sponsorship, and marriage expectations.
