Strict Regulations on Betting in Football

Professional football leagues across the world have set very stringent regulations on betting in football to ensure that the integrity and credibility of the game are upheld.

For the MLS, the betting regulations state that no player, coach, and any other person affiliated with the club is allowed to take part in any betting activities concerning football games, especially those that they are directly involved in.

Findings and the Disciplinary Action Taken

MLS reported that two players were found to be engaging in a lot of gambling on soccer matches, including their own teams, during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The league reported a case where both players bet on Jones to receive a yellow card, and indeed he received a yellow card in a match between Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls on October 19, 2024.

Jones and Yeboah played for Columbus Crew in 2024.

The players allegedly revealed their intentions to receive a yellow card to others who bet on them through sharing information with others who bet on them.

Most importantly, no evidence was found that these activities influenced match results in any way.

Yeboah has played for Ghana at the national team level but played for Manchester City from 2014 to 2018, although he never played for them at the main team level. He was on loan at Lille, Twente, and Oviedo during his time at Manchester City. After this period, he played for Numancia in Spain and Wisła Kraków in Poland. He played for Columbus Crew and LAFC in the United States.

Jones was born in Ghana but has played his entire career in the United States. Jones played for Philadelphia Union, Nashville SC, Houston Dynamo, Charlotte FC, and Columbus Crew in the United States. Jones has played for Ghana at the under-20 and under-23 national team levels.

Rising Emphasis on the Integrity of the Game

Many football associations across the world have stepped up the integrity of the game and the betting regulations set by the leagues.

The rise in the number of people engaging in online betting has posed a challenge to football associations, and as such, they have partnered with data analysts and monitoring agencies to ensure that the integrity and betting regulations set by the leagues are upheld.

A Reminder for Players on Staying Compliant

The punishment meted out to the two Ghanaian players serves as a reminder to all professional athletes that it is important to be compliant with the rules.

Many teams and leagues have educational initiatives in place to educate the players about the risks and consequences of engaging in sports betting.

It is important that the game is fair, responsible, and honest.

Integrity is a Core Priority

Major League Soccer has emphasized that integrity in the game is critical to the trust and confidence that fans, clubs, and others have in the game.

It is essential that the integrity of the game is upheld, and the rules are complied with to ensure that the game is fair.

This is an indication that there is an increased focus on eliminating misconduct related to sports betting in the world and that the integrity of the game is being upheld to protect the image of the game of football.
