Rwanda Unveils Africa’s First Autonomous Electric Air Taxi in Kigali

Rwanda has marked a historic milestone in Africa’s technological advancement with the launch of the continent’s first autonomous electric air taxi in Kigali. The groundbreaking unveiling took place during the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit, with President Paul Kagame officially introducing the EHang EH216-S aircraft.

The pilotless electric air taxi represents a bold step toward transforming urban mobility across Africa. With a top speed of 130 kilometres per hour and a flight range of approximately 35 kilometres, the two-seater aircraft can carry up to 220 kilograms, making it suitable for short-distance urban transport.

Equipped with advanced intelligent flight systems and multiple safety mechanisms, the EHang EH216-S offers a futuristic alternative to traditional helicopters, particularly for urban travel, tourism, emergency services, and logistics. Its electric propulsion system also aligns with Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

The initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between the Government of Rwanda, China Road and Bridge Corporation, and EHang Holdings, a global leader in autonomous aerial vehicle technology.

Kigali authorities have announced plans to expand the testing phases of the air taxi and invest in supporting infrastructure, including vertiports and regulatory frameworks. This move reinforces Rwanda’s ambition to position itself as a leading innovation hub in Africa, with a strong focus on clean energy, smart cities, and future mobility solutions.

Experts say the successful deployment of autonomous air taxis could revolutionise urban transportation on the continent, reduce traffic congestion, and attract global tech investment into Africa’s aviation and mobility sectors.
