Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has raised strong concerns over what he describes as an alarming attempt by a foreign national to establish an “Igbo Kingdom” on Ghanaian soil.
In a viral interview now circulating on social media, the outspoken MP criticized what he calls a clear violation of Ghana’s territorial and traditional sovereignty, allegedly led by a self-styled “Igbo King” from Nigeria who is reportedly acquiring land in Ghana for the said kingdom.
🔹 “This is a National Security Concern” – Sam George Warns
According to Hon. George, no foreign national has the right to lay claim to traditional leadership or set up a parallel kingdom within Ghana’s jurisdiction.
“This is Ghana. We are not a lawless state. You cannot come from another country and claim kingship on our land,” he said.
He described the reported developments as dangerous and unconstitutional, warning that it must be addressed immediately by state institutions to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s traditional systems.
🔹 Allegations of Land Acquisition for “Kingdom”
Reports suggest that the alleged “Igbo King” and his team have been purchasing land with the intention of establishing an Igbo settlement or kingdom. Sam George expressed worry that certain Ghanaian landowners and chiefs may be unknowingly or carelessly enabling such activities, putting national unity and legal order at risk.
“We cannot allow individuals or groups to create parallel traditional authorities. This isn’t just cultural—it’s a threat to our national security,” he added.
🔹 A Call to the Ministry and National House of Chiefs
Sam George called on the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the National House of Chiefs, and Ghana’s security agencies to probe the matter and reaffirm Ghana’s legal position on the installation of foreign traditional rulers.
He also urged Ghanaians to be vigilant and protect the country’s rich chieftaincy heritage, especially from practices that may distort its structure or undermine the authority of constitutionally recognized chiefs.
🔹 Background: Who Is the Alleged Igbo King?
The controversy erupted after videos emerged showing a man, reportedly of Nigerian descent, being adorned with royal regalia and publicly addressed as a “King of Igbos in Ghana.” The ceremony, which mimicked traditional African royal customs, has drawn criticism from the public and now political leaders.
While some have dismissed it as symbolic or honorary, others—including Hon. Sam George—believe it is a step too far and violates Ghana’s laws governing traditional leadership.
🔹 The Bigger Picture: Respect for Ghana’s Sovereignty
As Ghana continues to be a hub for African unity and multicultural tolerance, the MP emphasized that respect for sovereignty and cultural structures must remain non-negotiable.
“We welcome all people, but they must respect the laws and culture of Ghana,” he concluded.
