Chess grandmaster to visit Ghana Tuesday


Renowned British Grandmaster and a former world title contender, Nigel Short, is scheduled to visit the country next Tuesday to open the President’s Cup Championship slated for July 1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

According to the Ghana Chess Association (GCA), Mr Short was invited to give a public lecture on the sport and also host a clinic for both professional and amateur players in the country.

He is also due to present 600 chess sets to the GCA on behalf of the Kasparov Chess Foundation during the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the President’s Cup.

According to the Vice President of the Ghana Chess Association, Philip Ameku, the competition had been the most competitive and attractive tournament for the sport in the country.

The competition will be sponsored by KCF, African Regent Hotel, UT Bank and Riess and Co.
