Grant: Internal wrangling led to my early Ghana exit

Former Ghana international Kim Grant told Goal that crises within the Ghana Football Association are not new developments in the country’s football and that they contributed to his short stint with the Black Stars.

The former Charlton Athletic striker played few months with Ghana team, between 1996 and 1997, making seven appearances and scoring one goal.

“Political interference in the activities of the GFA was inseparable even in my days and it is not a new thing as far as I’m concerned,” Grant told Goal.

“The meddling stretched to the players’ camp and it really affected us,” he said.

“After the France 1998 World Cup qualifier against Morocco in 1997, I was asked to continue with the team to the Middle East for the Kings Cup tournament but I had to refuse because I had already being in camp for six weeks and my club at that time in the English Championship was pushing for the play-offs and requested me to return, which I did as they were the people paying me.

“I never got due bonuses from the GFA. The little I received I always gave to the local Black Stars players. And since I refused to travel for the Kings Cup, I was never called up again,” he said.

Grant now owns a football Academy in Praque Czech Republic called Kim Grant Football Academy and also runs Takoradi FC, a lower division club in Ghana.
